The Buxton Inn is placed in the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Government. The Buxton Inn, built in 1812, is currently celebrating 200 years of gracious service to travelers and guests. The Buxton Inn property is comprised of the main building and 9 other properties for a total of 10 buildings. Five buildings are finished and used as The Buxton Inn, while the other five properties are private homes. The Buxton Inn is surrounding a courtyard and garden area with 6 gorgeous fountains. The Buxton Inn properties surround a fabulous courtyard and gardens with cascading fountains creating the perfect place for a wedding of social gathering. The Historic Inn is Ohio’s oldest continuously operated Inn which operates in its original building. Built in 1812 by Orrin Granger, a pioneer from Massachusetts, it was called “The Tavern.” It housed a ballroom, dining room, dormitory style lodging and stagecoach drivers’ quarters. The Inn changed hands several times in the following years but kept in business due to its popularity as a celebrity hot spot. In 1829 the east wing was added and in 1851 a two story wing was added creating a courtyard in the center. The property was purchased in 1859 by James Dilley and renamed “The Dilley House” and then in 1865 it was sold to Major Buxton. Buxton created a well-ordered house, excellent cuisine, and a home like atmosphere. Major Buxton died in 1902 and Nell Schoeller, who had been associated with the inn for 30 years, sold the Inn to the current owners, Audrey and Orville Orr in 1972. The Orr’s faithfully restored the Inn from 1972 to 1974 and made it the property it is today.
